It is located at the intersection of Fourteenth and Main Street, in Jefferson County, Mt. Vernon, IL The two-story building is of Greek Revival design with entrances at both levels at the front of the building. The stairs accessing the upper front entrance are chained and the doors are locked. All visitors must enter the building through the lower front entrance underneath the staircase. An armed security guard is located at the front entrance. Visitors must sign in and pass through a metal detector and all packages, bags, briefcases, and coats must go through an x-ray machine. Items in bags identified as a risk are inspected by security personnel before the visitor can proceed into the courthouse.
